The Jura D6 vs E6 are among Jura’s top-line entry-level espresso machines for newcomers. And getting straight to the point, the Jura E6 comes out as the winner.

Both share almost all the features that play an essential role in making good-quality espresso, but the Jura E6 comes with a better grinder and a longer list of pre-programmed drinks compared to the Jura D6. In the rest of the post, I’m going to detail the differences and similarities between them.

Jura D6 Vs E6: Differences

The Jura E6 wins 3-1 against the D6. Let’s scroll down and dive deeper into the nooks and crannies of these machines and compare them.

Built-in Grinder

Winner: Jura E6

Firstly, let’s talk about the grinder.  I’m sure you’re already aware of the critical role freshly ground coffee beans play in achieving the ultimate espresso experience, aren’t you?

The Jura D6 and E6 both incorporate Jura’s patented Aroma grinder, but the D6 features a Professional Aroma Grinder, a newer version compared to the AromaG2 grinder found in the E6. For a quick comparison, the Professional Aroma Grinder offers a more consistent grind and works faster than its predecessor, thereby giving the D6 an edge here.

Both have an equal number of five grind settings. Remember only to adjust the settings when the grinder’s running, and as always, you likely won’t see the change until you’ve prepared a few cups of coffee.

On my first impression, the D6 has sort of a retro vibe with a plain text display, while the E6 looks a bit more modern with a TFT color non-touch display. In terms of ease of use, the E6 has my vote, but this one is also bulkier and heavier between the two. So, after all, I call this round a tie!

The D6 doesn’t have the extensive array of one-touch drinks you might expect from such a costly machine, or at least it offers fewer options than the E6, which is cheaper. Anyhow, both can produce amazing espresso and perfect cappuccino, and that’s all many people expect from their bean-to-cup machine. By the way, only the E6 has a bypass doser for pre-ground coffee (and descaling tablets).

Both enable you to adjust coffee strength, brew temperature, and water volume before saving your personalized settings. The D6 offers 4 different adjustable coffee strength levels, while the E6 gives you a broader spectrum for experimentation with up to 10 different coffee strength levels.

Jura D6 Vs E6: Similarities

Heating System

Both have a single thermoblock heating system, so they can perform only one heating operation at a time. I mean, they need to complete brewing the coffee before it can start steaming milk, or vice versa, and there is a short waiting period while the machine adjusts the temperature between brewing coffee and steaming milk.

Fortunately, the thermoblock system allows for quick heating of the water, resulting in less waiting time. Why? Unlike a traditional boiler, which heats a large volume of water, the thermoblock heats only the water required for the immediate brewing process. That way, it not only helps the water reach the desired temperature faster but also saves energy.

Brewing System

The D6 and E6 literally brew espresso in the same way.  Firstly, the Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (IPBAS) sends a small amount of hot water through the coffee grounds. It’s a process that mimics the traditional barista approach of “blooming” the coffee. This initial moistening helps to release the aromatic oils and flavors from the coffee, leading to a more flavorful and aromatic brew.

Then, the Pulse Extraction Process (PEP) takes place at a maximum pressure of 15 bars. Instead of a continuous flow, PEP pulses the hot water through the coffee grounds in short intervals. This Jura’s innovative technology allows for a fuller extraction of flavors, resulting in a more balanced and intense espresso. The pulsing action ensures that the water has optimal contact time with the coffee grounds, extracting the maximum amount of flavor.

Milk Frothing System

Both the D6 and E6 have a fine foam frother, and I don’t think I’ve had a bad experience with their frothing systems, except that Jura still refuses to include any kind of milk holder with them. You can certainly use a pitcher, glass, milk carton, or anything that can hold milk in your arsenal, but certainly, Jura should include their glass milk container rather than offering it as a separate purchase.

The process of making milk-based drinks on these machines isn’t just a single touch, but trust me, it is truly a breeze. They will prompt you to twist the knob on the right side of the machine from hot water to milk to add perfectly foamy milk to your cup. Once it’s finished, they will remind you again to turn the knob back to the hot water position before the espresso begins to pour.

Spout Type & Cup Clearance

There are two sets of dispensing spigots on the front of both, including a double one for espresso and a single one for milk froth. Their spouts are height-adjustable to accommodate cups of various sizes, from small espresso cups to some kinds of travel mugs, and the mechanism is the same for these two machines.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

The D6 and E6 both use a CLEARYL smart water filter, which removes impurities and heavy metals to protect the coffee’s aromatic development. What’s more, it helps minimize limescale formation, meaning less frequent descaling of your machine. But, and it’s a small but, it marginally reduces the water tank’s capacity and entails a small ongoing monthly cost.

Both also have an intelligent Water system. So when you insert the filter into the machine, it is automatically detected via RFID technology. This automatic detection removes the need for manual settings or guesswork on whether a filter is in place or not – another attempt by Jura to minimize human impact.

The aroma of coffee is just as important as its taste. And in terms of this, both machines have an airtight lid on top of the bean hopper to preserve the full aroma of your precious coffee beans.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Your espresso serves you delicious caffeinated drinks and only asks for a little effort from you to clean it at the end of the day. The milk frother, pipe, milk jug, and anything else that touches milk should be rinsed daily. Daily, you should rinse the milk frother, pipe, milk jug, and any part that interacts with milk. A swift daily rinse of the water tank, tray, and grounds container is also beneficial to ensure your machine stays in top condition.

Regarding descaling the machine, you need only to drop a Jura cleaning tablet into the bypass chute and follow the display’s prompts to kick off an automated cleaning cycle. If you use a water filter, you’ll find yourself rarely having to do this.

App Connectivity

If controlling everything remotely isn’t your thing, you’ll be glad that you can control the D6 and E6 from your phone, tablet, or even Apple Watch via the J.O.E. app, even if you have to get the Jura Smart Connect transmitter as an additional purchase.

All the settings to control the machine and customize each beverage are accessible through the app. You can even keep an eye on how much water and beans you have left and receive timely maintenance alerts.

Quick Rundown Of Jura E6

Jura E6 Automatic Coffee Center (Piano White)
  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): The Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) developed by Jura optimizes the extraction time. To make a short espresso, it forces the hot water through the ground coffee at short intervals. This process allows the flavors of the coffee to fully develop and deliver best results. With different intensity levels, coffee lovers can customize their coffee just the way they like it
  • Intelligent Water System: CLEARYL water filters supply perfect water quality for the best possible flavor. They also protect the coffee machine against limescale and remove substances that could impair flavor and aroma (such as heavy metals or chlorine) from the water. To make maximum use of the filter and its capacity, Jura developed the Intelligent Water System (I.W.S.)
  • Simple Operations: Buttons on the front of the machine and a modern TFT display make operation incredibly simple
  • Hygiene: The integrated maintenance programs and interchangeable milk spout ensure maximum hygiene
