Are you torn between the Delonghi Dedica Deluxe and the Breville Duo Temp Pro for your home espresso setup? After diving deep into the details, I’ve concluded that the Breville Duo Temp Pro stands out as the superior choice in this matchup.

Why does the Breville Duo Temp Pro take the crown? Well, for starters, its advanced features like PID temperature control and auto-purge function ensure that every shot of espresso is brewed to perfection. Plus, its sturdy build and intuitive interface make it a breeze to use, even for beginners.

Now, that’s not to say the Delonghi Dedica Deluxe isn’t a solid option. It’s just that compared to the Duo Temp Pro, it falls a bit short in terms of water tank capacity and advanced features. Still, if you’re looking for a compact and budget-friendly espresso machine, the Dedica Deluxe might be worth considering.

Delonghi Dedica Deluxe vs Breville Duo Temp Pro: Differences

In every aspect of this comparison, I give the Breville Duo Temp Pro a higher rating, resulting in a 3-0 victory over the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe. Stay tuned to uncover the distinctions and the fantastic features each machine brings to the table.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

Heating System

The heating systems in both the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe and the Breville Duo Temp Pro have their own unique characteristics.

The DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe features a Thermoblock heating system that I found to be impressively quick. As someone who values getting my espresso fix in the morning without too much waiting, the speedy Thermoblock was a welcome feature.

Plus, it has three brewing temperature options, although I must admit, I found them somewhat limited in terms of adjusting to my exact preferences. Even at the maximum setting, the espresso wasn’t as hot as I would have liked. But it still comes close to the ideal espresso temperature.

Now, when it comes to the Breville Duo Temp Pro, I initially expected it to have a double boiler due to its name, but it surprised me with its single boiler system. However, it’s not all bad news. I actually appreciate the heating system in the Duo Temp Pro. Breville opted for a stainless steel Thermocoil, which, in my experience, tends to provide more consistent water temperatures compared to the quick-heating Thermoblocks on the DeLonghi machines.

The only drawback I noticed with the Duo Temp Pro’s heating system is that it can require a bit of a recovery time between shots. This means you might have to wait a little when pulling back-to-back espresso shots. While this might not be an issue for most people, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re making multiple shots in a row.

Another difference is that the Breville Duo Temp Pro has PID temperature control, while the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe sadly does not. Now, what does PID stand for? Well, it’s a mouthful, but it’s essentially the secret sauce behind brewing exceptional espresso.

Having PID technology is a game-changer, and it’s one of the standout features of the Duo Temp Pro, especially given its wallet-friendly price tag. When coupled with the Thermocoil heating system, these two elements work harmoniously to maintain water temperature with remarkable stability and consistency.

Sure, Breville doesn’t give me the ability to fine-tune the temperature like the DeLonghi does, but I find myself forgiving and even favoring Breville’s heating system. Why? It might not offer the same level of customization, but it sure does keep the temperature consistent, and in the world of espresso, that’s often more precious than gold.

Filter Basket & Portafilter

Filter Basket TypePressurizedPressurized and Non-pressurized

There’s room for both pressurized and non-pressurized options in the world of espresso. Each has its own role to play.

Both Delonghi Dedica Deluxe vs Breville Duo Temp Pro offer pressurized dual-wall filter baskets.
Both Delonghi Dedica Deluxe vs Breville Duo Temp Pro offer pressurized dual-wall filter baskets.

I find that the pressurized dual-wall filter baskets included with both machines have their advantages. When I use these filter baskets, I don’t have to worry about whether my coffee grounds are perfectly ground or if I’ve tamped them correctly. This makes them an excellent option for beginners or for those times when I’m using pre-ground coffee.

Both the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe and the Breville Duo Temp Pro come with double-shot and single-shot pressurized filter baskets, catering to different preferences.

However, my heart has always leaned towards the non-pressurized baskets for a truly “authentic” espresso experience. In this regard, the Breville Duo Temp Pro emerges victorious in our comparison, as it also provides 1 and 2-cup non-pressurized filter baskets. These non-pressurized wonders offer a canvas for experimentation, allowing you to fine-tune your grind, dose, and tamp to achieve that perfectly balanced espresso shot.

The DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe doesn’t seem to offer compatible non-pressurized baskets, and that’s where it falls a bit short in this particular showdown.

Coffee Flavor

I found that the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe produced espresso with good depth and sweetness, although I couldn’t help but notice that the shots lacked a bit of body. The pressurized filter baskets, while convenient, didn’t quite deliver that syrupy mouthfeel I love in my espresso.

Now, when it comes to the Breville Duo Temp Pro, it pleasantly surprised me. It managed to extract the caramel sweetness, syrupy body, and well-balanced acidity from my coffee beans remarkably well. I must say that the espresso it produced was at the perfect temperature, thanks to the digital temperature control it boasts. It really made a difference in the flavor profile!

Design & Convenience

Dimensions & Build Quality

When it comes to the looks and build quality, the Delonghi Dedica Deluxe combines stainless steel and plastic in its construction. While I do appreciate the stainless steel elements, I wish there was more of it, as there’s a fair amount of plastic used in this machine. On the other hand, the Breville Duo Temp Pro’s appearance really caught my eye. Its stainless steel casing gives it a sturdier and more attractive look, in my opinion.

In terms of size and weight, the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe is undeniably more compact compared to the Breville Duo Temp Pro. This compactness is great if you have limited counter space in your kitchen. However, it does come with a trade-off in terms of capacity.

User Interface

Talking about the user interface, both of these machines keep it simple and newbie-friendly. Their user interfaces are designed to make things easy, reducing the learning curve that often comes with semi-automatic espresso machines.

First, about the Breville Duo Temp Pro’s user interface, I have to admit, it’s impressively straightforward. With a power button, a large central dial, and a button for choosing between steam and hot water, it couldn’t get much simpler.

That central dial allows you to switch between making espresso and using the steam wand, which also doubles as a hot water dispenser. Honestly, I don’t need a user manual to operate this machine.

Moving on to the DeLonghi Dedica Deluxe, it’s equally straightforward. There are just three buttons: one for a single shot, one for a double espresso shot, and another for switching to steaming. There’s also a handy dial on the side to engage the frothing wand.

Water Tank

The water tanks of these espresso machines offer different capacities, and it’s something to consider based on your daily coffee consumption. The Delonghi Dedica Deluxe comes with a 34-ounce water tank, which I find to be quite decent, especially given the compact nature of this machine.

On the other hand, the Breville Duo Temp Pro takes it up a notch with a larger 61-ounce water tank. For someone like me who enjoys a couple of espresso shots in the morning and maybe a cappuccino later in the day, this water tank size is more than sufficient.

What I particularly appreciate about the Duo Temp Pro’s water tank is its thoughtful design. Breville has added a handle at the top, which might seem like a small detail but makes a world of difference. Many water tanks lack handles, making them a hassle to remove and refill. This little feature adds to the overall convenience of the Duo Temp Pro.

Milk System

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

The Delonghi Dedica Deluxe uses a Pannarello wand with an adjustable cappuccino system for its milk system. This auto-frother takes the guesswork out of frothing milk, making it ideal for beginners. You don’t have to worry about the wand’s depth or positioning in the pitcher because the Pannarello ensures a decent approximation of microfoam by infusing the milk with the right proportion of air.

Plus, you can easily switch between the Cappuccino setting for milk froth or the Hot Milk setting for steamed milk without bubbles.

However, if you’re aiming for the perfect milk foam for latte art, the Pannarello wand might not deliver, but there’s a workaround – you can remove the metal Pannarello cover and use just the rubber steam wand for better control.

On the other hand, the Breville Duo Temp Pro comes with a traditional steam wand. If you’re a newbie, you might find it more challenging to use compared to the Delonghi’s Pannarello wand.

However, as you gain experience and expertise, you’ll come to appreciate this manual steam wand. It gives you full control over the milk’s texture, from milk froth to milk foam and even microfoam for latte art.

Auto Purge Function

After using the steam wand, Breville Duo Temp Pro automatically purges its heat system, ensuring that your next espresso shot is brewed at the right temperature, not the temperature of your steam.

The first time I experienced this feature, it caught me off guard with all its hissing and gurgling, making me feel like the machine was about to take flight! However, I quickly realized its value, especially for a single boiler system. It’s the default setting, so there’s no extra work for you, just be prepared for the noise.

The Delonghi Dedica Deluxe doesn’t have this auto-purge function for the frothing wand. Instead, I have to manually remove the Pannarello wand and rinse it thoroughly in the sink. It’s an additional step that, although not a deal-breaker, can become a bit of a chore. Plus, it’s easy to forget, and you might find yourself dealing with a clogged wand sooner or later. So, in terms of convenience, the Breville Duo Temp Pro takes the lead in this category.
