Jura E6 Vs E8: A Comparison Of Two Mid-Range Juras

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Both the Jura E6 vs E8 come from Jura’s E-Series, the mid-range lineup. They initially seem to have a lot in common regarding specs and technologies, but a closer look reveals distinct differences between the two. And if you ask me which one is better, my preference leans towards the E8.

The Jura E8 leads this comparison since it offers more one-touch drinks and grind settings than the Jura E6, not to mention that cleaning the former’s milk system is a bit easier. But, of course, these enhancements in the E8 are accompanied by a higher price tag.

Jura E6 Vs E8: Differences

The E8 has an overwhelming victory over the E6 with a score of 5-0. Keep reading for my detailed comparison, where I unravel the factors that set the E8 apart!

Built-in Grinder

Winner: Jura E8

Both the Jura E6 vs E8 come equipped with an inbuilt Professional Aroma Grinder, which offers ultra-fine grinds and is among the quietest grinders I’ve tested. That means you can brew a smooth cup of espresso early in the morning without waking up your still-sleeping household.

You can also adjust their grinders by turning the dial under a flap on top. The E6 features five grind settings, whereas the E8 offers six. The difference might not appear substantial, but the E8 actually enhances your ability to fine-tune the grind size, giving you a bit more precision and control over your brew. Always adjust the grinder while it’s operational to prevent any damage.

Milk Frothing System

Winner: Jura E8

The E8 has an automatic frothing system instead of a traditional steam wand. Hence, all you need to do to prepare a milky drink is press a button located right on the front interface. On the other hand, the E6 has a semi-automatic system, and you have to use a knob to adjust the amount of steam that comes out of the milk frother.

It’s disappointing that Jura doesn’t give you any complimentary milk holders, even for exorbitantly expensive machines. So, if you really need one, just be prepared to shell out additional funds for their exclusive glass jug. They also sell separately a refrigerated container, allowing you to keep milk cool without putting it in the fridge.

Setting up their milk systems is hassle-free. At least, it’s easier than tinkering with a manual steam wand. Just attach one end to the frother and put the other end of the tube straight into your milk jug. The hose then effortlessly sucks out the milk, froths it, and delivers it right into your awaiting cup. The milk froth and the espresso pour out together at a single point, so there’s no need to move the cup at any stage of the process.

Another difference between them is the range of one-touch drinks each offers. The Jura E6 provides a list of 11 pre-programmed drinks, while the E8 expands this offering to 17 different options. This is another good reason to pay extra for the E8.

Unique to the E8 are Cortado, Flat White (with a double shot option), and Latte Macchiato (also with a double shot option), which are not available in the E6. You can make these drinks with the E6, but the process isn’t as straightforward and requires more than just the simple press of a button.

Spout Type & Cup Clearance

Winner: Jura E8

Jura E6Jura E8
Spigot TypeDualDual
Cup Clearance2.6–4.4  inches2.6–4.4 inches

The E8’s main dispensing assembly includes three spouts – two at the front for dispensing espresso and one at the back for only hot water. And on the left side, it has two spigots, one for milk froth and one for espresso. On the other hand, the main dispensing unit on the E6 also features three spouts, two at the front for espresso and one at the back for both water and milk froth.

So does this difference matter? My short answer is yes!

With E8, you can prepare any available drink with just the press of a button, or, as Jura calls it – the One Touch Function. As for the E6, when you brew any beverages that need extra water, such as Americano or milk-based ones like Cappuccino,  you will need to manually rotate the dial. More importantly, the E8 ensures that if you take hot water to make tea, your tea remains uncontaminated by milk residue since the hot water and milk come out from two separate spouts. Meanwhile, the E6 requires swapping the milk outlet for the another one for hot water, which is a bit less inconvenient.

They share a clearance under the main dispensing unit, but the E8 boasts a generous 6.2-inch gap beneath the milk spout. That means if you’re making a milk-based beverage with this one, you can easily use a taller cup.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Winner: Jura E8

These two espresso machines are super easy to clean since they both have automatic cleaning programs. They will alert you when they need to be cleaned and descaled and provide step-by-step instructions directly on the screen

These machines need descaling every one to two months, depending on how often they are used. Jura recommends only using their branded descaling tablets, and you’ll find two tablets included in the box. Using the water filter can reduce the frequency of descaling, it remains an inevitable part of machine maintenance, after all.

Speaking of cleaning the milk system, the entire process of cleaning the E8’s milk system is more automated and necessitates less intervention from you, thanks to its one-touch cleaning system. Meanwhile, the E6 requires a more hands-on approach, including turning the frothing knob back and forth as well as emptying and then refilling the milk cleaning pitcher.

There are other tasks you need to undertake, including emptying the drip tray, dumping the used coffee grounds, cleaning the water container, and more. These chores are simple yet essential and should be carried out regularly, ideally on a daily or weekly basis.

Design & Convenience

The E6 and E8 have quite similar designs and dimensions. The only visible difference, except color, is probably that the E8 features a milk frother on the left side, while there is a dial in the same position on the E6, used to switch back and forth between pouring water and dispensing milk froth.

Both feature a traditional button-operated interface with a nice 2.3-inch display and a few buttons surrounding it. A touch screen could lend a more modern and trendy appearance to an espresso machine, but such a non-touch screen enables more intuitive navigation through settings and eliminates the need to clean off fingerprints constantly.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

Jura E6Jura E8
Water Reservoir1.9 liter1.9 liter
Bean Hopper0.29 liter0.29 liter

They share a 1.9-liter water tank and a 0.29-liter bean container. Their water tanks can work with a filter cartridge to enhance water quality, contributing to great-tasting coffee. Additionally, they are equipped with an intelligent water system that can detect filter use and track it.

The bean hoppers on these machines have the capacity to store up to 280 grams of coffee beans. There’s no rush to use them quickly because their airtight lids ensure that the beans remain fresh.

Programmability

These two Juras have 10 levels of coffee strength, three brewing temperatures, and three hot water temperatures. It’s worth noting that if you get the earlier version of one of them, you only have 8 levels of coffee strength and 2 water temperatures.

The new E6 also features a bypass doser for brewing a single cup of pre-ground coffee, while its older version only uses it solely for cleaning tablets. I’m an advocate for coffee made from freshly ground beans, but I must admit that this addition is essential for any modern espresso machine. After all, you will find yourself out of coffee beans one day and need a quick alternative.

Heating System

Another feature the E6 and E8 have in common is a single thermoblock heating system. Having one boiler means they can’t steam and brew at the same time, but thermoblock technology allows them to heat up swiftly for brewing. What’s more, they can quickly switch between processes without significant heat loss.

Brewing System

These two machines use the same method for brewing espresso. Both have I.P.B.A.S. (or the Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System) and P.E.P. (Pulse Extraction Process). Despite their sophisticated-sounding names, these innovative technologies really are game-changers.

I.P.B.A.S. is essentially a pre-infusion process where the puck is moistened with hot water under low pressure. Then, the E6 or E8 pulses hot water through the puck in short intervals instead of forcing all the water through it in one go, and this is called P.E.P. Working together, they result in even extraction and full-bodied espresso shots.

App Connectivity

Both the E6 and E8 can be paired with the J.O.E. mobile app, where you can customize, save your drinks, and prepare them right from your bedroom. The app also sends cleaning reminders and allows you to set up automatic cleaning schedules, which is a boon for the forgetful. The thing is that you need to purchase the Wi-Fi Connect unit separately to utilize this smart feature.

Jura E6 Automatic Coffee Center (Piano White)
  • Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.): The Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) developed by Jura optimizes the extraction time. To make a short espresso, it forces the hot water through the ground coffee at short intervals. This process allows the flavors of the coffee to fully develop and deliver best results. With different intensity levels, coffee lovers can customize their coffee just the way they like it
  • Intelligent Water System: CLEARYL water filters supply perfect water quality for the best possible flavor. They also protect the coffee machine against limescale and remove substances that could impair flavor and aroma (such as heavy metals or chlorine) from the water. To make maximum use of the filter and its capacity, Jura developed the Intelligent Water System (I.W.S.)
  • Simple Operations: Buttons on the front of the machine and a modern TFT display make operation incredibly simple
