Jura Ena 8 Vs S8: Differences

The Jura S8 unsurprisingly won against the Ena 8 with a score of 4-0. Are you thrilled by how different they are? Keep reading!

Design & Convenience

Winner: Jura S8

Dimensions & User Interface

Dimensions10.7 x 12.7 x 17.5 inches11 × 13.4 × 17.3 inches
Weight20.7 lbs22 lbs

These super-automatic machines indeed exemplify the sleek and modern aesthetic characteristic of Jura’s product line. They boast compact designs, making them an excellent fit for various kitchen sizes, from spacious to more constrained spaces. Their interfaces are neat and similar to each other in size but not type. The Ena 8 has a button-operated screen versus the touch screen on the S8.

Spout Type & Cup Clearance

Spigot TypeSingleDual
Cup Clearance2.2–5 inches2.8–4.6 inches

The Ena 8 features a single dispensing unit, with one for espresso and one for milk so you won’t need to move your cup when preparing a milk-based drink. Meanwhile, the S8 has two separate units and the one for milk froth is situated on the right side of the front of the machine and can be raised quite high. Both also have a separate faucet for hot water, ensuring it’s always clean and free from any residual milk.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

Jura Ena 8 Jura S8
Water Reservoir1.1 liter1.9 liter
Bean Hopper0.13 liter0.29 liter

The Jura E8 is equipped with a round water tank, smaller than the S8’s reservoir. They generally do not need to be refilled very often, although I recommend changing the water daily since, you know, nothing beats fresh water. Likewise, the Ena 8’s bean feeder is significantly smaller than the one on the S8.

Milk Frothing System

Winner: Jura S8

Both have an automatic milk frothing system, so you can easily get milk froth without dealing with the intricacies of a steam wand. However, I must say, I was a bit disappointed that these machines don’t come with a milk jug, considering their high price point. It’s just a small thing but it does take away from the overall satisfaction. Jura also sells several types of milk holders separately so you can choose the one that best suits you.

The best option, though definitely the priciest, is the Jura Cool Control, which is a climate-controlled milk container that you place right next to your espresso machine. It keeps the milk cool and ready to use at any moment, which is incredibly convenient.

There’s a more budget-friendly alternative – Jura’s branded glass container. This can be stored in the fridge and attached to the machine only when needed.  And honestly, if you’re ever in a real pinch, practically any of your own containers would work. You can even just use a glass cup and everything will be fine.

Well, I personally found that the Jura S8 can make better milk-based coffee drinks than the Ena 8. Its milk frother features a nifty switch that allows you to toggle between hot and steamed milk, allowing for much more precision when crafting different kinds of milky drinks.

User When creating a latte macchiato, both machines dispense the milk foam first, and then there’s this adjustable interval that allows the foam to settle in the cup. Only after this settling period is the espresso added, resulting in a great layering effect. It’s not just about the taste; it’s also about the aesthetic pleasure, and I definitely recommend using a clear glass cup for this.

The Ena 8 and S8 offer about a dozen one-touch drinks, both coffee and milk-based drinks. The S8 also has a double shot option for coffee drinks, including coffee, espresso, and ristretto, as you can see above. Both allow you to adjust coffee strength (10 levels), shot length, milk amount, and brewing temperature. Exclusive to the S8 is the option to fine-tune milk texture by turning a knob on the frother.

Both the Ena 8 and S8 have no user profile, which is a bit disappointing for some users. Still, the Jura S8 mitigates this issue by allowing you to copy and change the name of your personalized drinks. It’s not as convenient as having a personal profile, but it’s still a practical solution.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Winner: Jura S8

Both feature automatic rinsing and descaling processes to keep the internal components pristine. The only minor downside is that the manufacturer recommends using their own branded cleaning products, which tend to be pricier than the generic alternatives.

For milk system maintenance, the S8 makes things easier with a one-touch cleaning mechanism to clean the milk system after each use to keep it clog-free. Meanwhile, the Ena 8 requires you to rinse its milk system by hand.

Jura Ena 8 Vs S8: Similarities

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

Built-in Grinder

Both the Jura ENA 8 and S8 are quite impressive with the new Aroma G3 grinder. I’m a big fan of burr grinders like the one in these machines. Burr grinders are known for their ability to crush coffee beans evenly, extracting the full flavor and aroma from the coffee beans and leading to a richer and more enjoyable coffee.

Both feature 7 grind settings so you can experiment with different grind sizes to suit various brewing methods or coffee beans. Only change the grind setting while the grinder is active to prevent any potential damage.  It’s a bit like adjusting gears on a bicycle – you can only do it effectively when the bicycle is moving.

Heating System

In single-boiler machines like the S8 or Ena 8, the same boiler is used for both brewing the coffee and steaming the milk, which means you generally have to wait a bit between these two processes. Fortunately, thermoblock technology significantly reduces the time it takes to switch between brewing and steaming compared to traditional single boiler systems.

Brewing System

Regarding espresso extraction, both the  Ena 8 and S8 use the Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (I.P.B.A.S.) and the Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.). This combination of technologies is what makes the espresso from these machines not only good but toe-tapping great!

The I.P.B.A.S. is all about setting the first stage, which involves pre-infusing the coffee grounds and gently coaxing them to start releasing their full array of flavors and aromas. This step is crucial, as it prepares the coffee for optimal extraction, ensuring that each and every nuance of the bean is extracted.

Then comes the P.E.P., Jura’s exclusive extraction technology, and this is where the magic really happens. This technology works by pulsing the hot water through the coffee grounds in short intervals rather than in a continuous stream. That way, it allows for a fuller extraction of flavor, leading to a more balanced and nuanced espresso. God bless the Jura engineers!

Other Features

Water Filter

Both are designed to work with the CLARIS water filter, ensuring that every cup of coffee is made with water of the highest quality and protecting the machine from calcium build-up. That way, it can eliminate the need to descal the machine. Descaling can be a time-consuming and sometimes messy process, so this feature is a real game-changer.

Better yet, the Intelligent Water System on both is smart enough to automatically detect when a new filter is inserted, and when it’s time to change the filter, the machine alerts you. This is incredibly handy because it means you don’t have to keep track of the filter’s lifespan manually.

Airtight Lid

Both have an airtight lid to preserve the freshness and flavor of the coffee beans, which are the heart and soul of any espresso.

Firstly, an airtight lid helps to keep the coffee beans fresh. Exposure to air can lead to oxidation, which diminishes the beans’ natural flavors and aromas. When the beans are stored in a container with an airtight lid, they are protected from this exposure, maintaining their freshness and quality over a longer period of time.

Moreover, an airtight lid helps prevent external odors from contaminating the beans. Kitchens are full of various smells, from cooking spices to other food items, and these odors can affect the taste of the coffee if the beans are not properly sealed.

Bypass Doser

Both have a bypass chute, allowing you to use pre-ground coffee instead of the beans in the machine’s hopper. This is particularly handy in situations where you might want to make a cup of decaf in the evening or if someone prefers a different type of coffee than what’s currently in the machine.

both have a bypass doser
Both have a bypass doser

Think of it as a shortcut or a plan B – instead of going through the whole process of emptying the hopper and refilling it with a different type of coffee, you can simply use the Bypass Doser. That way, you’re not stuck with one type of bean until it runs out. If you’re in a pinch or have guests with different coffee preferences, this is like your ace in the hole.

Of course, this may not be something you use often. The quality and freshness of the grind from the machine’s built-in grinder are always superior to pre-ground coffee, wouldn’t you agree?

App Connectivity

Both can be controlled remotely via the Jura Operating Experience (J.O.E.) app. The name might not be the most appealing, but the functionality and convenience it offers more than make up for it. It allows you to control the machine remotely, which is incredibly handy. Imagine being able to start your coffee machine from your bed.

The availability of the J.O.E. app on the Apple Watch is also a feature that really excites me! The convenience of operating the coffee machine right from your wrist is something that feels straight out of a futuristic movie. And if you have Siri, you can just use your voice.

However, you have to purchase Jura’s Smart Connect transmitter to enable this functionality, and of course, you still have to get up to collect your espresso once it’s ready.
