I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Jura J6 vs Saeco Xelsis has been a fun debate for me to find out the better product. And after months of testing, Saeco Xelsis is the final winner for me.

Saeco Xelsis boasts of a compact yet intelligent design that will entertain couples for small families without any problem. The quality of espresso and milk foam impresses me a lot. This model is one of those expensive ones that impress me the most, and this product doesn’t even belong at the top high price.

As for Jura J6, I have been enjoying its tasty espresso and creamy milk foam as well. Overall, this machine is stable but compared to Xelsis, its espresso quality isn’t as consistent. Still, I recommend this model for small families that enjoy milk-based recipes.

Jura J6 vs Saeco Xelsis: Differences

Saeco Xelsis wins 3 – 2 against Jura J6 thanks to its exceptionally great espresso and milk foam quality, compact footprint, and durable titanium body. I will mention both models’ strengths and weaknesses below.

Coffee flavor: Tie

+Grinder

Directly, I will say that both machines’ grinders do a phenomenal job at producing even and smooth coffee ground. Judging from the used pucks, I can tell that they are consistent with the grinding work. Also, I like that Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6 don’t make much noise when the grinder works.

However, since Xelsis comes with a flat grinder while J6 comes with a conical-shaped one, I believe that the J6’s grinder will remain more stable and consistent in the long run. Conical-shaped grinders naturally don’t keep behind much leftover due to the downward diagonal path, making them less prone to jams.

I don’t declare that Xelsis will suffer from this issue, but I have experience with flat grinders. After about 6 years, it’s hard to avoid jams. Nevertheless, you will have to brew very frequently and daily to reach an unideal state. So I want to emphasize that this is not a deal-breaker for any espresso machine for home use.

+Dosing + tamping

Saeco Xelsis: Dosing + Tamping
Saeco Xelsis: Dosing + Tamping

With Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6, users don’t have to dose and tamp manually since these devices are super-automatic.

With Saeco Xelsis, users can adjust the dose from 7 – 10g to achieve smooth and mellow to robust espressos. With Jura J6, the dose varies from 5 to 16g so that the flavor can reach an even stronger level. In general, I have brewed delicious, balanced, and aromatic espresso with these devices.

However, with Jura J6, I have noticed a strong bitter tinge in espressos that don’t leave a pleasant aftertaste. Sometimes it will get too bitter, so I have to adjust the coffee strength again, even though I brewed the same recipe without any problem before that.

As for dosing time, Jura J6 is faster since it takes around 10-15s to make flat white. And for Xelsis, it takes approximately 35-40s to start dispensing flat white.

+Heating system

Both models use a single Thermoblock to heat water, and I find the operation fairly similar. It takes 3-5 minutes to achieve a good brewing temperature, more if you like your coffee hot.

Nevertheless, the temperature performance of Saeco Xelsis is slightly better since I always get hotter drinks for the same priming time. So far, it has been doing a consistent job in terms of efficiency and temperature.

Milk System: Tie

Milk quality-wise, I don’t have a word for complaining about it. Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6 work very well in this aspect. I enjoy the variable milk texture that ranges from creamy and moist to airy and dry. Overall, Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6 can make lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, etc., without difficulty.

Utilities: Saeco Xelsis

Saeco Xelsis wins thanks to multiple user profiles, making the device perfect for families where each person has a different taste. You can program the drinks distinctively, and the system will remember them for future brewing.

Cleaning & Maintain: Saeco Xelsis

I prefer Xelsis in this aspect due to its HygieClean system that helps rinse the milk path from any impurity in the most thorough way possible. The system pushes high-pressure steamed water through the path, so there is no milk leftover.

Other than that, the model boasts many complete cleaning cycles. So it’s easy to keep the machine clean at all times. I have tested it, and I can say that the cycles work. But, remember to combine the cleaning with a special solution to ensure an optimum result.

As for Jura J6, it also is easy to wash since all I have t do is add a cleaning tablet and hit the button for the washing cycle. However, I find the result quite messy since the system fails in clearing the entire brew path and milk path from leftover, given that I still notice a faint smell of old coffee sometimes.

Design & Material: Tie

Each product has easily noticeable strengths and weaknesses in this aspect. Saeco Xelsis is made of titanium and plastic, while Jura J6 is made of stainless steel and plastic.

Compared to titanium, stainless steel is definitely less durable and heavier. Thus Saeco Xelsis (made of titanium) is less prone to damage. And, if you maintain it well, this espresso machine should last many years.

However, it is easier to leave a scratch on Titanium than Stainless Steel. Thus, if you move this machine around frequently or scrape the machine by accident, the marks will show more visibility. In other words, Jura J6 will remain new-looking if you treat it carefully.

Jura J6 vs Saeco Xelsis: Similarities

Let’s get to know some similarities that Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6 share.

Auto shut-off function

The pair can shut off automatically without requiring extra attention from users. The best part is that we can configure the waiting duration from 15 minutes to 9 hours, depending on personal preference.

Many users or even salers say that automatic power-off is unnecessary, and I don’t share the same idea. Given the environmental context we live in, I suggest purchasing models with this energy-efficient feature.

Of course, this detail should be a plus only. I don’t recommend sacrificing other optimum features for auto shut-off.

Adjustable coffee strength

If you need an espresso machine that can satisfy the diverse preferences of different users, Saeco Xelsis and Jura J6 and handle the task. You can brew from mellow/ smooth to robust espressos thanks to the adjustable coffee strength option.
